My back’s aching, my bra’s too tight, my hips shaking from left to right…

I think the best workout of ALL is the workout that does NOT feel like work.  This is why I love, love, LOVE dance fitness!  Zumba, Swing, Salsa, Blues, Hula, Tahitian, Mixxedfit, Capoiera, Ballroom, Ballet, hitting the club, and Everything else.  I’ll take it ALL.  I just love to dance.  I don’t go clubbing like I used to, but I was really starting to prefer dancing alone even on the dancefloor or with a group of people rather than with a dance partner.  There is something so freeing and liberating about moving freely to the music without caring about what others think.

I wasn’t always this way.  I used to be so shy and afraid of any kind of improv.  I grew up with Classical disciplines like Violin, Piano, singing Opera, symphony, and swimming.  I thrived off of structure.  Ask me to improv and I would have to lock myself in a room and compose or script something for myself to learn and follow.  Did I mention that I am also a recovering perfectionist?  Everything always had to be just right before I could even think about flowing with it.  This is great for organization, but can stunt creativity and growth in the long run.  Not to mention the rigid mentality can cause unnecessary stress and who needs that?!?!

I started dancing when I lived in Cali.  Just practicing on my own.  This shy naive girl stunned that my booty was capable of moving like that.  Back in the day, my lips would move at the same time as my hips because I was concentrating so hard.  Talk about embarrassing!!!  I was finally able to break the bad habit when I learned to feel the music.  It took me awhile, but it was worth-it.  When I was trapped, dance became my outlet.  I would spin and twirl through my tears and krump through my anger and pain.

I think the best advice my ex could have given me was to “dance like I have no backbone” and to remember that music is what you hear and dance is the visual expression of the music.  As long as you move to the beat you’re good.

When I came home from Cali my Momma took me to my 1st Zumba class and I have been in love ever since.  When life gets heavy…  Turn up your music and DANCE IT OUT like no one is watching!!!
