My Heroes

“When you were a kid, did you want to have the same job or a different job than your parents when you grew up?”

My biggest heroes have always been my parents.  In my eyes, they will always be superstars.

My parents met their freshman year in college.  My Mom came from Hawaii and had never moved away from the island before then.  She talked about how homesick she was and how miserable it was that the radio stations only played country music.  In college, Mom studied speech and audiology with a minor in Spanish.

My Dad grew up in Guam.  I asked him what made him choose his college and he said that he liked the emblem and he wanted to see snow.  He chose engineering because he did not like reading and writing.  I think he made a great choice.  My mom always talked about how challenging my dad’s program in college was.  The class started out being huge and by his senior year only a select few graduated.

After graduating from college, my Mom was a teacher and taught the 3rd grade.  I loved looking through our photo albums and seeing pictures of her class all in uniform.  She taught back when every classroom wall had a giant chalk board and the students wrote in cursive.

When I was a child, my mom was a dispatcher for the Police Department and my dad was a civil engineer.  I was fascinated by my dad’s job because he got to wear a hard hat when he went into the field for inspections and he supervised several offices in different cities.  He knew how to build bridges.

When I was 3, we moved and my mom decided to stay at home with me while my dad continued to work.  I know it was a big sacrifice for her to make and I am glad that we had the time together.  I also feel blessed to have a dad who worked hard to support his family throughout the years.  I admire and respect both of my parents.

I really appreciate all the time my mom has been able to spend with my sister and I since she chose to stay at home.  I don’t know if I could be a stay at home mom myself.  I think that I will always have some kind of job even if it’s just part time.  Right now, my goal is to graduate from college with my undergrad degree and have a better understanding of technology and the world around me.
