I believe that we can learn a lot about a word by studying its derivation and its root.  In high school I was fascinated by word etymology which is the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.

trans-the prefix trans is a word-forming element which means “across, beyond, through, on the other side of, to go beyond” it is Latin.

form- comes from the Latin word formare which means “to form”

tion- the suffix tion means “the act of.”

According to the dictionary:

transformation- noun

  1. the act or process of transforming.
  2. the state of being transformed.
  3. change in form, nature, appearance, or character.
  4. Theater a seemingly miraculous change in the appearance of scenery or actors in view of the audience.
  5. Logic  Also called transform. one of a set of algebraic formulas used to express the relations between elements, sets, etc., that form parts of a given system.
  6. Mathematics the act, process, or result of transforming or mapping.
  7. Linguistics the act, process, or result of transforming or mapping.

What does “transformation” mean to me?

I thought that it was fitting that I happened to see that today’s “Daily Prompt” was one word and that word is transformation.

When I first started blogging I made the “daily post” a daily ritual.  It gave me sparks of inspiration and helped ignite my fire for writing… If there is such a thing.  I didn’t have a computer for over 3 years and I let that separate me from the wonderful, wild, world of blogging.  When I returned to blogging I looked for the daily prompt, but could not find it as easily as before.  I think it is because I have many blogs in my reader…

Through the years I have made multiple attempts to do a “Happiness Project.”  I think that last year 2015 was my most successful attempt.  At the end of last year I decided that happiness is well and good and definitely a worthwhile pursuit, but I am at a point in my life where I need to buckle down and get serious about my life.  I also noticed that it was time for me to make some major changes that would help me to become the best version of myself.  I knew that it would be a long road and that these changes would not come easily, but in the end it would all be worth-it.

This year I started the “Transform Your Life Project.”  I think that working on this project has helped me stay aware of my goals and the ways that I want to change.  Additionally, it has given me motivation to keep going and my weekly posts have served to hold me accountable.

To me transformation means changing and stepping outside of yourself to become something new.  Really pushing and digging deep to evolve and let go of the past.

I like to imagine a sculptor with a piece of stone or marble.  To the world it just looks like a giant rock, but the sculptor sees the potential and the masterpiece already created.  All they have to do is animate the stone and help it realize its true potential.  This is a long task that takes consistency, patience, and a steady hand.  In the end the sculptor creates something beautiful.

We are the sculptors in our own lives and we can transform into who we want to become.
