Showy. Pretentious. Vulgar?

ostentatious- adjective

  1. characterized by vulgar or pretentious display; designed to impress or attract notice.

This particular definition to me is interesting.  I distinctly remember that ostentatious was one of my vocabulary words in middle school and the definition I learned back then was:

ostentatious showy and pretentious

I guess it is a very similar definition but back then I always imagined a fancy peacock or the highly ornate Baroque period.

I guess I never associated the word vulgar with ostentatious.

It’s fun to approach words from a new angle!
