Too Much Of A Good Thing…is bad

Yesterday I had a mission to get $hit done.  I even told one of my tenants that I was going to get a coffee while I was out and about to give myself extra motivation.  I decided to go to Dutch Bros because you can get a lot of coffee at a very affordable price also they have a punch card which pays off in the long run.  One thing I wish Dutch Bros would change about their menu is I wish they would include caffeine content with each drink the way that starbucks does.  I wanted an iced coffee with a lot of caffeine, but less calories than most and so I chose “Double Torture.”  I also liked the fact that it had vanilla.  It said, “extra shot vanilla cold brew mocha.”  I chose to get it in cold brew form because it’s not something that I make at home.  Then I headed off on my merry way to tackle my “fast-track-to-do-list.”

The coffee tasted very mild and not very sweet.  I started to doubt that it had much caffeine at all.  Then I felt wildly optimistic and happy throughout the day and got to work.  I was also looking forward to meeting my friend Mica at Barnes and Noble at 7.  I attacked the bathroom and worked hard.  I noticed that my hamstring and hip was aching a little so I made sure that I took breaks.  I also kept the fan on and the windows open.  By the end of it I was exhausted and I made myself some lunch.  Then I got dressed and was all ready to go when everything rapidly went downhill…  Literally, I could hardly sit upright in a matter of minutes. One minute, I was watching a youtube video and eating my salad and the next thing I knew, I felt like death.

I thought that maybe if I just lay down I would feel better, but by 6:30 I doubted my ability to get behind the wheel of a car and I decided to cancel my visit with Mica.  I absolutely hate cancelling plans especially that last minute and I felt so bad.

As the years have gone by, I have learned that I absolutely have NO tolerance for any brown liquor. That means: whiskey, bourbon, scotch, rum, brandy, etc.  In my early 20’s it was no problem, but now it makes me sick as a dog even just a sip.  Well, last night’s escapade felt just as bad and it only got worst as the evening went on.  I was sweaty, lightheaded, and could not stand upright.  I literally felt badly hungover which rarely Ever happens to me.  In fact I have not drank Any alcohol at all since my bf left for New Zealand.

I was sick, restless, and exhausted, but could not sleep last night.  It was just an overall miserable experience.  I also had no appetite.  If this is what being a diabetic would feel like then I better quit sugar completely right now.

Thankfully I feel a little better today, but definitely still out of it.  At first I wasn’t even sure exactly what it was, but then I talked to my bf he reminded me that I get sick when I have too much caffeine and that is true.

I had to learn this lesson the HARD way and hopefully for the very last time.  I never want to go through that Doozy again.  Today I searched online and found out that the drink I ordered  had 263 mg of caffeine.  Well, no wonder I was sick!  That is just straight poison.

So yeah, I am going to be cutting out caffeine for awhile.  Do you have a caffeine sensitivity or allergy that dramatically affects you?  Comment below to share your story.

  1. I love Dutch Bro’s. The only gripe I have about them is that they don’t have standard black coffee. You can get an Americano, which is espresso that is watered down. I used to always get iced Rebels, which is basically Red Bull that is flavored… not any more. Now I like getting their half-sweet green teas. Much cheaper!

Also, I’m pretty sure Dutch Bro’s is more caffeinated than Starbucks. It certainly gets me going better! My fiance LOVES the smoothies. I’m trying to do less sugar, so I can’t do my favorites any more.

I used to have a major addiction to energy drinks, but I have switched to coffee and found that I like it a lot more, now. MUCH cheaper too!

Great post. I’m still following your adventures, don’t worry! I’m sure you’re doing the same for me, so thank you!

    1. Hi Jacob!
I agree, Dutch Bro’s does have a fun variety of drinks and treats. Half- sweet green tea sounds really good. I will have to try that next time :).

I think my addiction has been to the sweet coffee drinks and have been trying to switch to more basic or black coffee and now after yesterday’s incident probably tea.

Thanks so much for stopping by.. I’m glad we got to chat. I am following your adventures too!! Keep up the Great work!!!

  2. Omg that sounds awful! At least you and your bf figured it out :/ I get sick too if I drink coffee on an empty stomach or I don’t hydrate throughout the day. Also, I used to work in coffee shops and I remember that sometimes a small cup of black coffee will have more caffeine than an espresso drink — at least of the espresso drink only has one shot. So that may be an option too!
Also, congrats on working on your to-do list :)) that always makes me feel better :)) you’ll have to update us on your caffeine/no caffeine journey ❤

    1. Hi Jess!
Yes, it was terrible. 3 days later and this is the first time that I don’t have a pounding headache. It was another wake-up call for me because I haven’t been doing the best with my nutrition and healthy lifestyle and this made me realize that I really should make some healthy changes so that I don’t suffer so much in the future.
It’s pretty crazy, last month it was my hamstring/hip injury and this month it was a nutrition-related lesson. This time I am going to listen to the lessons that have been dropped in my lap :).
I didn’t realize that a small cup of coffee could have more caffeine than an espresso shot, but it makes sense. Thanks for mentioning that. In the past, I usually switched to green tea rather than coffee, but I think this time around I am going to explore my options with herbal teas and fruit-infused water 🙂

  3. Reblogged this on Living Out Loud and commented:

A year later, I still have a sensitivity to caffeine and brown liquor. Thankfully I have not been pushing those boundaries since this terrible experience. I have not completely eradicated coffee from my life yet and still have about a cup or two a day, but I will not let it make me sick anymore!
