Barter system

If the world worked on a barter system, how would you fare? Would you have services to barter? Would you be successful, or would you struggle?

I like the thought of living in a community where each person brings their gifts and talents and contributes to the greater good.

There was one summer where my friends tried to organize a “commune-style potluck” once a week.  Each week a different person would cook an entree for the rest of our friends.  We had a friend who made a delicious veggie stir-fry and another friend made a grilled tempeh dish, I made a vegan kobacha soup and chocolate-dipped strawberries.  At the time I was vegan and it was so helpful to spend time with other like-minded individuals.  It was funny because when it got to Tamen’s turn (the person who came up with the idea to do this in the first place) he made everyone his favorite “Amy’s organic microwave burritos” and brought dessert (as a bonus) in the form of Ben and Jerry’s and for me he brought a rice dream frozen dessert.  I thought it was thoughtful that he also thought of the vegan and vegetarian people too.  That tradition only lasted one summer because the following year many of the people graduated from college (I live in a college town that has a Geo duct for its mascot), another person went abroad to teach ESL and we all went in our own directions, but I always look back fondly on that summer of hula hoops and potlucks ❤

I still love the idea of living in a community.  I would like to contribute by teaching dance and movement classes, growing a garden, cooking, and any other way that I could help.  I imagine that it would have its challenges especially in the beginning, but I bet that it would get better with time.

What are your thoughts on the barter system and what would you bring to the table?  Comment below to share your ideas!

Love, Joy, and Blessings Always,
