Adventurously Strange Fruit

Today was a pretty good day.

We woke up early around 5 am and picked up some iced Americanos only to snuggle up in bed and sleep in (americanos nestled safely in the fridge.)

I woke up (a 2nd time) well rested and got ready to head out for a swim.  I went to pick up my friend Grace from her house and she invited me in for her homemade Chinese dumplings.  They were incredibly delicious and such a nice surprise.

We made it to the pool a little later than usual and it was a perfect time because it was so quiet and peaceful.  I did some solid stroke work on my butterfly.  Probably the most focused drill work I have done in a decade.

I dropped off my friend at work then drove home and my bf and I set out for food.  We ended up at the taco truck and both ordered declicious carnitas burritos and I tried tamarind soda for the 1st time.

After that we decided that we wanted to get some tropical fruit so we headed to the Asian Market and this is what he chose.  I love my bf because he surprises me and is always down to be adventurous.

Apple bananas, Giant Aloe Vera, Bread Fruit, Durian?!?!, and CALAMARI?!?!  Like whole squids…

I am very curious about the bread fruit and the durian.  My mom has never been a fan of durian and it honestly scares me a little so I will keep you posted on the whole “durian situation.”  And I ended up cleaning the squid which reminded me of a slimy science dissection lab and my bf did the cooking.  He made us delicious Calamari in a coconut curry sauce and even added some bananas.  I wasn’t sure how it would turn out and how edible it would be…  I was especially skeptical about those bananas, but I ended up being super pleasantly surprised!!!   The calamari melted in your mouth and the curry was so flavorful, rich, and delicious and the bananas were surprisingly delicious.  The texture almost reminded me of a potato, but even better.  I guess it pays off to be a little daring and adventurous!

I am amazed by how such unlikely ingredients can come together and form such a masterpiece!

  1. Ahh I love the Asian market! I could spend hours in there lol I always get hello pandas, some random packet of ramen I’ve never had, and fresh bread if they still have it. My mom always told me that durian smells really bad so i will be looking forward to see how you like it! Also I have to ask what is the box that says placenta? So curious! Anyway, sounds like such a fun day :))

    1. Hi Jess!
Yes, the Asian market is great! Yeah, in the past I have avoided durian so it will be interesting to see if the taste matches that smell.
And the placenta box is an oatmeal soap. I don’t know why it says placenta because the ingredients are coconut milk, oatmeal, glycerin, pretty ordinary ingredients, but the soap smells amazing and is so creamy and moisturizing! I hope you will have a wonderful weekend and I will let you know how the durian turns out 🙂

      1. That is so interesting about that placenta soap! I’m glad i asked though because I’ve been having skin issues lately and from my online research I’ve learned that oatmeal is great for calming down many skin problems! I may have to look for that next time I’m there :)) & yes def lmk :)) ❤

      2. Hi Jess!
Yes, I have heard that too. That oatmeal really helps with skin issues. I have heard good things about taking a colloidal oatmeal bath to comfort itching, redness, or eczema symptoms ❤
