Samba or Ballet?

I have about a week and a weekend before the winter quarter begins!  Thank goodness because I still have some programming topics to learn more about and some homework that is due on the first day of class.

I have a decision that I would love to get some opinions about…

I am currently registered for 20 credits, but I think I am going to drop down to 18.  I would go all the way down to 16, but I still want to take a dance class.

Should I take Samba or Ballet?!?!

Please comment below with your thoughts.

I love them both very much and the professors are both marvelous.  I will share some of the things that I like about both forms of dance.

Team Samba:

  1. We have a live drummer and that makes the whole experience out-of-this world- AMAZING!  There is something about that drum beat that makes me want to dance.
  2. I adore Janelle Campoverde.  She is a wonderful teacher who brings out the best in everyone and a beautiful dancer.
  3. We study movement and Feldenkrais which makes me aware of myself and my body.
  4. Brazilian Dance is a fun and sexxy dance that makes you work up a sweat and brings out your sexxy side.
  5. It is only offered fall and winter quarter so I won’t be able to take it in the spring.
  6. We learn Samba, Samba Reggae, and Orixe.  We also learn how to sing in Portugese and play the instruments…  Oh and Capoiera!!!

One of my all-time favorite beats that we dance to.  Doesn’t that just make you want to jump out of your chair and dance… Brb 😉

Team Ballet:

  1. I love the way that ballet improves my posture and overall grace.
  2. I adore Jehrin Alexandria she is also a beautiful dancer and a wonderful instructor.
  3. We have a pianist who is wonderful.
  4. I could definitely use some leotard and pink tight time.  It is very humbling and empowering at the same time to spend a couple of hours in a leotard and tights with people who are more fit then you.
  5. I want to keep working towards dancing En Pointe.
  6. After studying ballet for a couple weeks, I was able to do the splits for the first time in my life!

Either way, I dance to feel alive.  It brings me so much joy and confidence!  It feels like I have become a different and better version of my self ever since I discovered dance last fall.

I also dance to honor my late professor and friend, Kabby Mitchell.

So what are your thoughts?  Would you choose Samba or Ballet if you were me?  Comment below to share your thoughts.  I would do both if I could and maybe I still will…  We shall see.

Love, Joy, and Blessings Always,

❤ Alana xoxoxo

    1. Thanks Kat! Yes, I am kind of leaning towards samba too. Thanks for your input. It is funny because both styles are so opposite. I could use that little confidence boost going into the new year. And yes, a live drummer 🙂

    1. It’s wonderful that you study ballet. At this point I am thinking that I will try and do both. School starts next week and I can try it out. If it ends up being too much with my workload I would probably have to drop one at that point, but it’s worth a shot!

      1. Thank you 🙂 Yes, it will probably be a while before I can dance en pointe. I want to make sure I am strong and flexible enough. I admire you for your dedication to such a beautiful artform 🙂

  1. Hey Alana!!! I’m sorry, I’m only catching up your posts now… What did you go for eventually? Personally I’d go for Samba. There are definitely some Belly dancers that combine the Salsa moves. I would prefer Samba because it is intense and free. The music brings out happiness, movement, excitement, freedom. I’ve never danced Ballet, but I think it would require too much discipline for me. I currently also dance standard and latin with my dad, and even though it does require technique, I admit I do love it. But honestly, nothing beats the energy that comes with belly dancing for me. I guess it comes down to the big question: What gives you the most energy? xoxo Sarah

    1. Hi Sarah! It’s okay. I have to do the same thing too. I chose samba, but then I ended up taking neither because I got an independent learning contract approved for this quarter at school which means that I don’t have to be on campus. Given the choice I do prefer samba especially since there is a live drummer and the moves make me feel so sensual and powerful at the same time. Someday I want to try belly-dancing. It is so beautiful and looks like a killer workout! I have decided to try something different this time around with my weightloss journey. I am focusing almost strictly on my nutrition then once I get my weight down I will add exercise back in. I am nervous about this because it is hard for me to wrap my mind around the possibility of losing weight without a ton of exercise, but we shall see how it goes. Wish me luck!

      ❤ Alana
